When someone in Kandivali searches "AC repair near me" or "car service Borivali", Google shows three businesses on a map before any normal website. That box is called the local pack, and for most local businesses it is where the majority of calls come from.
The good news: ranking there has less to do with how big your business is and more to do with how well your online presence is set up. Here is the exact process I follow for local clients.
1. Claim and verify your Google Business Profile
Everything starts with a verified Google Business Profile (earlier called Google My Business). Search your business name on Google; if a profile already exists, claim it. If not, create one at business.google.com and complete verification.
Use your real business name exactly as it appears on your signboard. Adding keywords like "Best AC Repair Mumbai" to the name breaks Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
2. Choose the right categories
Your primary category is the single biggest ranking factor you control. Pick the most specific category that matches what customers search for, such as "Air conditioning repair service" rather than just "Repair service". Then add secondary categories for other services you genuinely offer.
A quick way to choose: search your main keyword on Google Maps and check which primary category the top three competitors use.
3. Fill in every section completely
- Services and products: list each service with a short description and price range if possible.
- Description: 600 to 750 characters explaining what you do, where, and why customers choose you.
- Hours: accurate regular and holiday hours. Businesses shown as "open now" get more clicks.
- Service areas: the neighbourhoods you actually cover.
- Attributes: payment options, accessibility and anything else that applies.
4. Add real photos regularly
Profiles with recent, genuine photos get more direction requests and calls. Upload your shopfront, team, vehicles, work in progress and finished jobs. Aim for a few new photos every month rather than fifty on day one.
5. Build a steady flow of genuine reviews
Reviews influence both ranking and whether people call you. What matters is quantity, how recent they are, and the words customers use in them.
- Ask every happy customer, ideally right after the job, with a direct review link sent on WhatsApp.
- Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and specifically.
- Never buy fake reviews. Google detects patterns and can remove reviews or suspend the profile.
6. Create local landing pages on your website
Google cross-checks your profile with your website. A page for each main service, and for important areas you serve, helps Google understand where and what you are relevant for. Include your name, address and phone number, a map, real photos and answers to common questions.
7. Keep your NAP consistent everywhere
NAP means Name, Address, Phone. It should be identical on your website, Google profile, Justdial, IndiaMART, Facebook, Instagram and other directories. Inconsistent details confuse Google and weaken your ranking.
8. Post updates and track results
Use Google posts for offers, new services and seasonal updates. Then check the Performance section of your profile monthly: searches, calls, website clicks and direction requests tell you what is working.
Common mistakes that hold businesses back
- Keyword-stuffed business names.
- Wrong or overly broad primary category.
- Old phone numbers or closed-hour mismatches.
- No replies to reviews.
- Website with no mention of the area or service.
